Preparing For Care
What to Know About Kidney Disease
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a medical condition in which the kidneys cannot effectively do their job of filtering water and various toxins from your blood. It may exist for some time before a patient first begins to show any symptoms or tests show any indications of this disease.
Healthy kidneys help to regulate blood pressure and also maintain a good balance of blood chemistry that supports many other organs in the body. When the kidneys begin to lose their power to cleanse the blood, other parts of the body may also struggle.
About 15% of people have some level of CKD. People most at risk for developing this condition tend to be older than 60, or have other risk factors such as diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or even just a family history of CKD.
Fortunately, even the early stages of CKD are relatively easy to detect through simple blood tests.
Treatment for CKD can begin with simple lifestyle changes and regular exercise, including smoking cessation, and can progress through efforts at controlling blood pressure to more intensive medical interventions.
